Moments of Mindfulness

This is a heavy time, to say the least. As people of color, we have carried this weight for so long it has become routine. We must take time to be more mindful of living in the moment, especially with dark times facing us yesterday, today, and tomorrow. We need to take off our armor and check in with ourselves. Here are a few tips on creating moments of mindfulness that we hope bless your spirit to continue on another day.

1: Purposeful Chores

Your daily or weekly chores can become more pleasant and rewarding to your spirit if you choose to do them with purpose. Focus on what you have to do, one thing at a time. Remind yourself why that task is important to you and your environment. Honor that task and what it represents for you by choosing to solely focus on completing that specific task. We pride ourselves on multitasking but there is reward in taking things one at a time.

2: Carve out time

Every morning (or night), carve out the time to clear your head for a few minutes of meditation, stretching, journaling, drawing, or whatever grants you a moment of peace. Creating space for you to channel within yourself before your day starts will bring clarity. Resting your mind before you lay down for bed every night will gift you better rest. This can be a quick 5 minute, or longer 30 minute commitment. No matter how long or short, do yourself a favor and make the time.

3: Mindful Listening

Choose to listen more throughout the day-- at work, with your friends & family, or your partner. Many of us are quick to respond and share our point of view before we even take in the information being presented to us. As an act of love & respect honor what is being shared and listen fully, without prepping yourself for immediate response, just simply listen.

4: Clear Your Space

Cleansing your space can look different for each of us. It is vital we clear our space of anything or anyone that is not pouring back into us. This can be clearing your home of unnecessary clutter, going through your social media and making sure you follow accounts that you feel connected to or that provide you with uplifting content, or this could be distancing yourself from people who use you and never return the favor.

5: Awareness of Thoughts

We think so many thoughts we can barely keep up with all of them. Be more mindful of the thoughts you have throughout the day. Using a journal, small notebook, or your notes app jot down your thoughts daily. This will create an awareness of your thoughts and ideas and how you can reprogram negativity and self-doubt. Checking in with yourself, requires you to study your thoughts.
